Waterfalls Park, Wadi El Rayan National Park

The two lakes at Wadi El Rayan National Park are joined by a channel and a waterfall. This is the only waterfall of its kind in Egypt. This beautiful site overlooks the waterfall as well scenic views of the Rayan lakes.

This intervention introduced a plaza that follows the natural shapes of the landscape and is large enough to accommodate the tens of thousands of visitors who come each year. Development of this waterfall site also included the performance of interpretation facilities, bazaars, cafeterias, visitor center and other visitor facilities which resulted in better visitor’s enjoyment and stakeholder’s satisfaction.

The design character embodied the region’s vernacular architecture and cultural identity while maximizing the use of local building materials and specialized local labor; this engaged community participation and created livelihoods for local builders and artisans.

* The construction of these facilities was made possible with the support of EEAA, the Government of Italy and UNDP.
